Hi
and welcome to another "nothing but pure content"
weekly tip.
Getting
in-bound links to your site is one of the most important
things you can do to generate traffic to your site:
*
It helps to get your site listed in the search engines.
*
It increases your link popularity, which in turn boosts
your search engine ranking.
*
It helps to build targeted reciprocal streams of traffic
to your site.
Links
to your site are normally obtained by agreeing to place
a link from your site to another one. These are called
reciprocal links or link swaps.
But
if you decide to create a reciprocal link with another
site, which is highly recommended, there's one thing you
need to ask yourself for before you agree to swap links...
"How
easy is it for a visitor to FIND the link back to your
site from your link partners site?"
Listen,
it's feels great to get a request for a reciprocal link,
but unless there is a natural and easily accessible path
to the page where your link is located, then you simply
won't get any benefit from it at all.
Let
me give you an example:
Jim
has a website and he has placed a links page on his site
to attract new link partners. Smart man is Andrew.
Someone
contacts Jim and requests a link back to his highly related
niche website. So Andrew checks the link back to his site
and everything looks fine. However, the other site has
requested a link back to their homepage (rather than another
specific page), so Jim first checks out the home page.
I told you he was smart :-)
What
did Jim find?
*
No link to the "link directory"!
*
No link to a "related sites" page!
*
No link to a "resources" page!
*
In fact, No link to any page at all where his link will
be located!
In
other words, the other site was requesting inbound links
back to its home page, but effectively hiding the return
link from the search engines and from website visitors.
To
visitors or the search engines, the link back to Jim's
site doesn't even exist, which makes it useless.
So
next time you get asked for a reciprocal link, check the
path that people and search engines would use to get from
that site over to yours. You might be surprised what you
find.
Don't
be fooled. Reciprocal links are one of the key elements
of getting a high ranking from the search engines and
this should be a main component in your overall marketing
plan.
But
unless your link is located on a page that can be found
from the home page or is located on a page that is more
than 3 levels deep, ie 3 clicks from the home page, then
forget it and move on. It's value is completely worthless
to you!
Have
a great week,
